Adventure Racing in Trinidad Trinidad’s first Adventure Race, the Lucozade Sport North Cross Adventure Race, was organized by Ryan Mendes, Jason Gooding and Bruce Hay on Sunday April 14, 2002. The race was held in the Chaguaramas area and attracted over a hundred competitors who raced in teams of two. The race disciplines included running/trekking, navigating with maps, mountain biking and rope ascending. Since that first race ECO Adventures was formed by Mendes and Hay with a vision to promote the sport of Adventure Racing in Trinidad & Tobago and ultimately to the rest of the Caribbean. The local adventure races have grown in the number of disciplines (paddling was introduced to island raid 2003), duration and overall challenge. The new
challenges presented to adventure racers have caused the sport to grow
by leaps and bounds daily in popularity. Adventure Racing is one of the
few sports where just completing a race is often considered a victory.
Another driving factor in Adventure racing is the emphasis that is placed
on teamwork, rather than individual achievement.
