Adventure Racing in Trinidad

Trinidad’s first Adventure Race, the Lucozade Sport North Cross Adventure Race, was organized by Ryan Mendes, Jason Gooding and Bruce Hay on Sunday April 14, 2002. The race was held in the Chaguaramas area and attracted over a hundred competitors who raced in teams of two. The race disciplines included running/trekking, navigating with maps, mountain biking and rope ascending.

Since that first race ECO Adventures was formed by Mendes and Hay with a vision to promote the sport of Adventure Racing in Trinidad & Tobago and ultimately to the rest of the Caribbean. The local adventure races have grown in the number of disciplines (paddling was introduced to island raid 2003), duration and overall challenge.

What is Adventure Racing?:

Adventure Racing is a term given to competitions comprised of several rugged outdoor events occurring almost nonstop over a period ranging from several hours to several days. Participants are usually organized in teams, though there are a growing number of races for individuals. It is considered one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
Although there is at present no set format to an Adventure Race, all races include some form of map reading or orienteering. Participants are generally 'off the road' in forests, trails or even in the wilderness and must find their own way from one point to another. Events typical in a race may include hiking/trekking, trail running, climbing/rapelling, mountain biking, paddling, horseback riding, rafting and mountaineering. Some events also have mystery skills testing components like rope bridges, cargo-nets, crawling under or over obstacles etc..

The new challenges presented to adventure racers have caused the sport to grow by leaps and bounds daily in popularity. Adventure Racing is one of the few sports where just completing a race is often considered a victory. Another driving factor in Adventure racing is the emphasis that is placed on teamwork, rather than individual achievement.
Adventure Racing offers an easy crossover for cyclist, runners and water sport enthusiasts just to mention a few.
